stone master reduc - August 24, 2014s

author’s note:

The extraordinary patience of things!
               — Robinson Jeffers

Here in the canyon
the lacerated boulder waits
with great patience

as I struggle to awaken to its wisdom

but though I still sleep
I can feel the profound quiet
of its unfathomable depth;

through its steadfastness
the boulder commands me
to listen

to what can not be spoken:

a silence more powerful
than any heavenly poetry.

Working to improve
my weak hearing
every day, I return to the stone
and in the presence of its peace, I find
a just little more
of that master boulder
solid in the darkness
of my depths.

This returning is my ritual:
my homing, my homage,
my prayer, my growth.
